HOORAY!! Finnally a congressman who wont write angry letters back to the constituents he is supposed to serve. A man who wont say he is against Dubai taking over our ports only to oppose inspection of all cargo containers that come into our ports (Yes - Peter King is a hypocrite). And a man tough enough to win - even if outspent 2 or 3 to

LOOKS LIKE KING IS TAKING MEJIAS SERIOUSLY - AND HE SHOULD. WE GOT OURSELVES A CANDIDATE!

CHECK OUT WHAT A HYPOCRITE KING IS WHEN HE SAYS HE OPPOSED THE PRESIDENT ON DUBAI - DID HE FORGET TO SAY THAT AS CHAIMAN OF THE HOMELAND SECURITY COMMITTEE IN CONGRESS THAT HE EFFECTIVELY KILLED LEGISLATION TO INSPECT ALL CARGO CONTAINERS COMING INTO OUR PORTS UNDER PRESSURE FROM BIG CORPORATE INTERESTS NOT TO LONG AFTER???? YOU CAN'T HAVE IT BOTH WAYS PETER. TALK ABOUT FLIP FLOPPING ON AN ISSUE. DAVE NEEDS TO HAMMER HIM ON THAT ONE.

From todays Newsday (May 25):

Nassau Democrats yesterday nominated North Massapequa Legis. David Mejias as the challenger to 14-year Republican incumbent Rep. Peter King of Seaford.

Before 200 supporters at the party's convention last night, Mejias, 35, a lawyer who has served almost six months of his second two-year term as a county legislator, denounced King as a George W. Bush loyalist who no longer sees Long Island as a priority.

"He [King] has abandoned the people of Long Island," Mejias told his fellow Democrats at the Long Island Marriott in Uniondale .

But King, reached in Washington, said: "I'm an independent voice for my district. I support the president when he is right, such as in the war on terrorism. I opposed him on the Dubai port deal and I strongly oppose his immigration position."

In December, Mejias said some Democrats in the nation's capital asked him to consider a run against King, who they said was vulnerable because he was viewed as close to Bush. "But I never said I'd run," said Mejias in an interview, "and when it became clear that my legislative colleague, David Denenberg (D-Merrick), was seriously considering the challenge, I opted out - for party unity, because of the legislative chaos at the time."

Denenberg didn't announce his candidacy until May 7, only to drop out two days later for personal and business reasons.

Mejias would not say how much, if any, money he has for his campaign. "I've gotten a lot of support, and the filing period ends June 30th and everyone will know then," he said.

In accepting the party's nomination, Mejias said, "I believe in our American dream ... because I've lived it." And then he talked about how his Ecuadorian mother and Cuban father met in an English class in Hempstead.

But it was his attack of King that got the most response from Democrats. Mejias lambasted King for cutting Medicare and Medicaid, raiding the Social Security Trust Fund, gutting Head Start and federal student loan programs, supporting cuts for veterans' health care and cutting billions from Homeland Security, a committee the congressman chairs.

"Obviously," said King, who already has more than $1.25 million for his campaign, "the Democratic bosses gave him [Mejias] a laundry list of charges, and he has no idea of what he is talking about."

Before Mejias was nominated, County Executive Thomas Suozzi made a passionate plea for Democrats to rally behind his candidacy for governor. He said he is the only candidate talking about property taxes and that he knows what to do to fix it. He asked the party faithful to join him at a rally on June 6, at the Cradle of Aviation Museum.

So what is new, Congress and the Washington community has no people interest in their works they are for the rich, corporations, and consistently leave out the middle class, now including the young. This is classic example for voting these bums out.

i heard the speech. i hoped for a more decisive anti war statement. it seemed that he was more focused on class war and skewering the oil companies. that was somewhat humorous and disengenuos as i sat in my car in the parking lot waiting for the festivities to begin, a very large chunk of the drivers arried in some sort of gas guzzler. mejias will win because the national tide as well as the democratic tide are turning blue. he is lester wolfe defeating steven derounian circa 1964....the war is a debacle and i hope he makes that his focus.
